How to Look After your Skin in Summer

As our wardrobes switch up to deal with the summer months, it’s time to do the same with our skincare routines. The rising temperatures, increased sunshine and office air-con can wreak havoc on our complexions, meaning you’ll have to put a bit of groundwork in to prevent any damage to your skin. From the SPF you need to the best way to cool down, here’s how to look after your skin in summer.

Skip the Foundation

In the warmer months, trade your heavier makeup for lighter creams and lotions to let it breathe – just as you’d trade your jumpers for light t-shirts and loose dresses. Opt for a tinted moisturiser that will give you the coverage whilst also nourishing the skin and creating a lightweight, natural finish. The Chantecaille Just Skin Anti-Smog Tinted Moisturiser provides hydration, SPF15 protection and foundation-like coverage, all while offering antioxidant benefits – perfect for summer in the city.

Use Sunscreen

It goes without saying, but sunscreen is a must in any summer skincare regime. Protecting the skin against harmful UV rays, it works to prevent skin damage, premature ageing and skin cancer, and the best bit is that new innovations means formulas are more lightweight and less chalk-like than ever – meaning it will fit seamlessly into your morning routine. Look for products with at least SPF 30, but choose SPF 50 for the best protection. The Alpha-H Daily Essential Moisturiser is our favourite.

Increase Your Dose of Vitamin C

Vitamin C may be good for your internal health but it also works wonders for your skin too. Its antioxidant nature means it helps to minimise sun damage, it has anti-ageing properties and it also helps the skin to heal itself, meaning it can reduce brown spots. For daily skin revitalisation, choose the Murad Essential C Night Moisturiser, which also contains vitamins A and E to encourage cell renewal and provide antioxidant protection.

Keep Cool and Hydrated

As well as being uncomfortable, heat in summer can have a negative effect on hydration levels and dehydrate the skin. The easiest way to combat any dryness is with a face mist that can be used throughout the day – keep a bottle in the fridge for extra coolness. Try the Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber Toning Mist for a product that will detoxify and hydrate skin.
