Copenhagen’s Lokomotivværkstedet was transformed into a large pink box for the By Malene Birger SS17 show; further proof if it was ever needed that this is the colour of the season.
For this collection, creative director Christina Exteen did what the Danish design house does best: loose silhouettes in light, feminine fabrics with the odd splash of embellishments. Tailored tunics came worn with slightly embellished straps, worn over loose-fitted trousers and lace-up flatforms, while further beaded details were found on low-cut dresses, drawstring bags and scattered across the shoulders of high-neck shifts.
The other texture to make a consistent appearance – and a new venture for By Malene Birger – was fur: pink, fluffy fur. Found on mini bucket bags (worn across the models’ backs), on block heeled shoes and sliders, it added a pop of youthful femininity to the otherwise-sophisticated pieces.
Apart from pink, we saw a range of colours – from bright and pastel blue to apple green, grey, white and black – offering a range of shades for spring/summer.
Following on from AW16, Exteen explored the suit in this collection. For this season though, it was more relaxed, ranging from the loosely tailored cropped white suit, to the striped silk pyjamas, showing us this trend isn’t going anywhere fast.
