BOTW: Stranger Things and the Return of Vince Staples

A collection of the coolest cultural goings-on this week, as curated by Coggles.

Best-of-the-web

  1. What Makes a Great Antagonist?

We enjoyed this video from Lessons from Screenplay which explores what makes the ultimate protagonist by analysing the brilliance of Heath Ledger’s The Joker in The Dark Knight.

  2. The Greatest Film of the 21st Century

A BBC poll of 177 film critics from 36 countries has named David Lynch’s neo-noir Mulholland Drive the greatest film of the 21st century. The film was followed by In the Mood for Love in second place and Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood in third.

  3. On Becoming Eleven

One of the hottest TV series of this summer, Stranger Things’ leading actress Millie Bobby Brown this week shared a video revealing her transformation to become Eleven, the series’ central protagonist.

  4. A New Magazine Exploring Scotland’s Creative Riches

Vanguards, a new publication founded by Edinburgh College of Art students James Roberts and Hugo Ross, has been created in an attempt to capture the cultural riches of Scotland. Featuring brands and products admired by the pair, the photogenic first edition of the magazine is out now in Scotland and online.

  5. A Minimalist Tokyo Apartment

Tokyo-based architectural studio Minorpoet has revealed a new project to renovate a local apartment featuring a kitchen hidden behind a folding door. The design uses furniture to retain a clean, minimalist vein throughout, an approach to design seen in the work of M.J. Van Hee whose recent exhibition at the Design Museum Ghent we also enjoyed. See the photographs over at Dezeen.

  6. Vince Staples is Back

Californian rapper Vince Staples follows up last year’s Summertime ’06 album today with his new EP entitled Prima Donna. Featuring vocal performances from A$AP Rocky and Kilo Kish plus a collaboration with English musician James Blake, the album marks another exciting release in the hip-hop world following Frank Ocean’s Blond last weekend. Check the album out over on iTunes or on Spotify.
