Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, Ottavio and Rosita Missoni, David Bailey and Jean Shrimpton…the fashion world has spawned many a great and influential couple, but there haven’t been any quite like Karl Lagerfeld and his cat, Choupette.
The two met in 2011, after designer, creative director and master of monochrome Lagerfeld was gifted Choupette by French model Baptiste Giabiconi. It’s safe to say it was love at first sight, with Lagerfeld even going so far as telling CNN in an interview that “there is no marriage, yet, for human beings and animals…I never thought I would fall in love like this with a cat.”
Choupette, instantly recognisable by her fluffy snow white fur and light blue eyes, soon started to gain fame in her own right with her own Twitter and Instagram accounts portraying her as the high-maintenance apple of Lagerfeld’s eye.
Not only has she got her very own maids and a bodyguard, Choupette has also graced the pages of Vogue, Elle and V magazine and has released her own capsule makeup collection with Shu Uemura, aptly named ‘Shupette’.
Above all, though, Choupette is Karl Lagerfeld’s number one, his muse, his inspiration, previously commenting: “She is the centre of the world. If you saw her, you would understand. She is kind of Greta Garbo. There is something unforgettable about her, the way she moves, the way she plays. She’s an inspiration for elegance. For attitude.”
No more is this apparent than in Lagerfeld’s eponymous collection, where cartoon versions of him and his sidekick grace t-shirts, bags and accessories. In the past we’ve seen the two as robots, the two on holiday in Hawaii and we’ve even seen the two become one in Tiffany Cooper’s tongue-in-cheek illustrations that formed her collaboration with the brand.
The latest collection in which they both star is the Winter Holidays Collection, where we see the duo donning goggles atop snowy mountains and flying through the sky on skis. Discover the collection on Coggles here.
