A Closer Look into the Sports Luxe Trend for Women

Sports Luxe is not a new trend; it is one that has popped up season after season, constantly being reinvented whilst other trends rise and fall around it. Why? It’s easy, effortless, and - done correctly – can be sexy, sophisticated and understated all at the same time. It’s the off-duty model look; the look for the woman who cares about fashion but in a nonchalant kind of way. Put simply, it works. Every time.

Trainers paired with skirts and dresses are no longer reserved for teenagers; sweatpants need no longer be confined to Sunday mornings around the house but worn out with a pair of killer heels; and grey sweatshirts are now the epitome of chic. It’s a fashion revolution, and one that’s here to stay.

For SS15, Lacoste, Jasper Conran, Ganni and Preen by Thornton Bregazzi are at the forefront of this trend, using sportswear influences to put a fresh new look and silhouette into summer wear.

Opt for tennis whites injected with pops of green, as seen at Danish brand Ganni this season. Simple luxe white pencil skirts and midi dresses were paired with white trainers, while track pants were updated in bright green and worn with cropped sweatshirts.

Fuss-free utilitarian separates make up Jasper Conran’s SS15 collection. His take on sports luxe is all about ease, with elasticated waists, dropped shoulders, oversized shapes and nautical-inspired pieces creating a ‘just thrown on’ look.

Lacoste has long been known for its association with sportswear, but this season it’s sleek and has sex appeal. American Football shirts became mini dresses complete with jackets tied casually around the waist, neoprene swimsuits were worn as tops tucked into shorts, and skirt and top combinations were light and sheer, with slashed hems showing flashes of skin.

The Maasai Cricket Warriors from the plains of Kenya were the inspiration for Preen’s SS15 collection. Mixing traditional prints with cricket jumpers and oversized white pant suits brought boldness to the sports luxe trend, injecting into it a fresh summery feel. Recreate the look by experimenting with different layers and colours to create new and interesting silhouettes with a sports luxe influence.
