5 refreshing gin cocktails for summer

Nothing taste's better than that first sip of a gin cocktail on a sunny day, low in calories and with so many different alternatives it has become a national favourite.

With the added health benefits such as helping fight infections and disease, and easing digestion, there's no doubt that gin is top of our cocktail list. Perfect as a summer spritzer or peppery and cutting when mixed with ginger, here are 5 summer gin cocktail recipes to test this year.

#1 St Clements

Oranges and lemons, sing the bells of St Clements. Beginning life as a mocktail, it wasn’t long before someone suggested adding a splash of Hendricks gin to make this the perfect summer tipple.

Ingredients
  • 25ml Hendricks Gin
  • 25ml Lemon Juice
  • 75ml Bitter Lemon
  • 100ml Fresh Orange Juice
  • 1 Orange Wedge to Garnish

#2 Tanquerey No10 Martini

Summer drinks needn’t all be fruity and fresh, a dry martini is a perfect antidote to the summer heat, sipped quietly on a veranda somewhere warm and exotic.

Ingredients

  • 50ml Tanquerey No TEB
  • 10ML Dry Vermouth
  • Pink Grapefruit or Lime to Garnish

#3 Ginger Fizz

Peppery and dry, the ginger fizz offers a spicy take on a cocktail classic. A soothing blend of ginger ale and gin, the drink is suited to those who like a refreshing drink that isn’t sweet or citrusy.

Ingredients

  • 50ml Gordon’s Gin
  • Thinly Sliced Ginger
  • Dash of Angostura Bitters
  • Ginger Ale
  • 2 Teaspoons of Caster Sugar (If Desired)
  • 2 Squeezes of Lemon (If Desired)

#4 Garibaldi Sbagliato

A mix of Campari from Northern Italy with oranges from the South, the Garibaldi Sbagliato fuses fruity, refreshing citruses with decadent fizz to create a light and tasty summer drink.

Ingredients

  • 25ml Hendrick’s Gin
  • 25ml Campari
  • 50ml Fresh Orange Juice
  • 1 Orange Wedge for Garnish
  • Champagne to Top

#5 Basil Smash

A cocktail that suits a sweltering summer’s day, the Basil Smash was conceived by Jörg Meyer of the Lion in Hamburg in 2008. The drink quickly became a phenomenon, winning “Best New Cocktail” at the 2008 Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards.

Ingredients

  • 50ml Greenall’s Gin
  • 25ml Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 5ml Sugar Syrup
  • 8 Torn Fresh Basil Leaves
