Established in 1949 by Kihachiro Onitsuka, Asics began as Onitsuka Co. Ltd, the first sports shoe company in Japan. Creating basketball shoes with soles that mimicked octopus suckers to grip the court, the company soon became known for its high quality running shoes and trainers with performance-enhancing designs.

In 1977 the company changed its name to Asics - an acronym of the Latin phrase ‘Anima Sana In Corpore Sano’, meaning ‘a sound mind in a sound body’ – promoting the idea that sport creates a happy and healthy lifestyle.
