With a chunky rubber sole, sturdy leather and bright yellow stitching, Dr Martens boots and shoes are amongst the most iconic in the world. The story begins in 1945 when German doctor Klaus Märtens added a tyre to the bottom of his army boots; the design later picked up by British shoes manufacturer R. Griggs Group Ltd.
They refined the shape and design, added that iconic stitching and in 1960, launched the first Dr Martens 1460 boot. The boot came to define major aspects of British history – the working classes, skinheads and punks – becoming a symbol of rebellion and non-conformity. Today, the Dr Martens collection has expanded to Chelsea boots, sandals and more, as well as that original lace-up boot.
