High-quality tailor Emary founded the label Aquascutum in 1851. He had invented and patented the innovative technique of shower-proofing wools and was the first to introduce rain-repellent cloth. The name Aquascutum originates from the Latin “Aqua” water and “Scutum” shield.

Aquascutum’s have always made it their mission to provide stylish protection from the unpredictable British weather. During the Great War of 1914, which was mainly fought in the trenches, Aquascutum developed a new - now legendary - ‘trench’ coat to keep the soldiers warm and dry. This trademark garment embodies unique and revolutionary qualities which have become synonymous with luxury, longevity and style.

Over the decades Aquascutum has dressed many powerful patrons: British Royalty and politicians such as HRH King Edward V11, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher; Hollywood legends including Sophia Loren, Greta Garbo, Sean Connery, Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart and Peter Sellers; and even intrepid explorers such as Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing, who wore the Aquascutum advanced D711 fabric to protect them against the harsh elements as they climbed Everest for the first time in history.
