Australian photographer Tamara Dean's images explore themes of ritual, intimacy and decay set within the contemporary Australian landscape.

Like many photographers, Dean started her photographic journey documenting personal lifestyle and relationships, but her thorough and thoughtful approach and beautifully etherial aesthetic allowed her images to stand out from what is a heavily saturated and often empty genre of photography. Her contemporary documentary work further explores subcultures and social rituals, aiming to illuminate the real lives and stories often overlooked by mainstream media.

Tamara's 2009 project 'Ritualisms' explores the disconnect from contemporary landscape and pace of life, and delves into the shared desire to understand our existence and our mortality.

Last Friday Dalston’s Kristina Records hosted DJ QU, one of our favourite DJ’s and producers from America’s East Coast, for an in-store before his headline set for Make Me at Basing House later that evening.

Along with the stable of artists who have appeared on Jus Ed’s Underground Quality label such as Fred P, Levon Vincent, Jenifa Mayanja and Jus Ed himself, QU has been a quietly influential figure in New York's house renaissance of the last few years, and he is also known to be one of the most affable guys in the business - something we were happy to experience first hand.

For Spring/Summer 12 The Inoue Brothers have taken the initiative to work with the region of Tohoku, Japan, which experienced the devastation of the Tsunami created by the country’s most powerful earthquake since records began over 100 years ago.

This limited T-shirt only collection is an expression of efforts to commission work for operational textile co-operatives of factories and workshops whose commissioned contracts have been withdrawn due to production risks. It's an approach that is characteristic of the brothers' thoughtful and considered approach to their work, which extends as far back as the long-term relationships that they build at every stage of the supply chain - be it alpaca shepherds in Bolivia or a cooperative of beading ladies from the township of Khayelitsha in South Africa.

For the Tohoku collection, The Inoue Brothers have worked with friends who share their values, including underground art duo Outlaws London, South African conceptual artist Xander Ferreira, LCD Soundsytem frontman and DFA label boss James Murphy, and pioneering Tokyo streetwear label Sasquatch Fabrix.

Coggles favourite Oliver Spencer closed down London Fashion Week yesterday in brilliant fashion, his cool, quintessentially English aesthetic applied to an AW12 collection of smart tailored pieces in an equally smart colour palette of navy, grey, brown and red.

Last week we were invited to 2 Temple Place, a beautiful Neo-Tudor mansion for the Draw In Light Autumn/Winter 12 presentation at London Fashion Week.

Proving once again that the simplest ideas are often the best, particularly when it comes to creativity, Harry and Polly chose a life-drawing theme with art students as their models, drawing friends of the label who posed nude throughout the show.

The presentation brilliantly dramatised the ‘work of art’ essence of Draw in Light and its beautiful creations, which are made by hand by Harry and Polly in their East London studio, while at the same time providing an elegant metaphor for the name of the brand: light streamed in through the windows and onto the models as they worked, literally drawing in light.

Yayoi Kusama is perhaps Japan’s best-known living artist, her prolific career spanning the nine decades of her life and taking her from rural Japan to New York and onto contemporary Tokyo.

Working in an astonishing variety of medium including painting, sculpture, illustration, film, performance and installation, Yayoi is perhaps best known for her repeating dot patterns – spectacular, immersive, and (perhaps) suggestive of the artist’s obsessive tendencies.

Indeed, since the late 70’s Kusama has lived voluntarily in a psychiatric institution and many a commentator has suggested her work speaks of a desire to escape from psychological trauma. This may or may not be true, but certainly Kusama’s work provides a window into her mind - an invitation to explore a fascinating world that's brought to life in spectacular fashion by the Tate Modern in a 14-room exhibition, culminating in the Infinity Mirrored Room - an exploration of infinite space 'and the artist's journey of self-obliteration'.

Yayoi Kusama is exhibiting at the Tate Modern until 5th June 2012.

Paul Smith Jeans Spring Summer 12 has arrived at Coggles so we thought we’d take some time to say a little about the collection.

Drawing inspiration from the work of two key cultural figures in France - the late artist Louise Bourgeois and the director Jean Luc Goddard, the colour palette for the collection consists of two themes; the first reflects the inspiration drawn from Bourgeois tapestries - muted and bleached out tones of grey, navy and indigo are mixed with soft pinks and purples – while the second theme contrasts with these soft colours by mixing together strong primaries and acid tones, in reference to the work of Jean Luc Goddard.

Expect chinos and jeans in shades of jade, pink, copper and blue, sitting alongside fluro-floral tie-dye print shirts and t-shirts, while tailored jackets in neutral shades provide a refined finish.

La Mer de Pianos is a short film exploring the oldest piano shop in Paris, and its owner, Marc Manceaux.

As the title of the film suggests, Marc's shop is quite literally a sea of old pianos, many of which are harvested for spare parts - a process that is visibly difficult for Marc. The film captures the passion and poignancy of his work, particularly the decline in demand that seems to suggest the oldest piano shop in Paris may be on borrowed time.

At a time when many of us are thinking about returning home for Christmas, twenty-one-year-old Swedish photographer Bim Hjortronsteen's project 'the ice is getting thinner' caught our eye.

We liked the reflective and personal nature of the project, using photography to help her slowly make sense of an environment, time and reality that seemed distant, yet strangely familiar.

Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry is the first feature-length film about the internationally renowned Chinese artist and activist, Ai Weiwei.

In recent years, Ai has garnered international attention as much for his ambitious artwork as his political provocations. Beijing-based journalist and filmmaker Alison Klayman gained unprecedented access to Ai from 2008 to 2010, documenting Ai’s artistic process in preparation for major museum exhibitions, his intimate exchanges with family members and his increasingly public clashes with the Chinese government.

Ai's appreciation of the influence of social media as a political activation tool permeates the film but his ability to speak freely, particularly online, is increasingly fragile.
Twenty-two year old photographer Sophie Xu's work caught our eye this week.

Born in Paris and raised in the Bronx, Sophie's images deal with the everyday and are inspired by 'beauty, light and youth'.

Sophie's style and images are varied - some possess the low-fi candid aesthetic of the everyday, whilst other projects, such as 'wall space' dial up the minimalism, exaggerating the subtle beauty of a space normally overshadowed by its function.

We recently saw a small selection of Dutch photographer Viviane Sassen's images at London's Hotshoe Gallery for their latest exhibition, 'Other I'.

Sassen's contribution to the group show that also features work from Alec Soth and Wassinklundgren (a partnership between Thijs groot Wassink and Ruben Lundgren) features images taken from her personal work, focusing on her childhood country, Kenya.

The work, which appears as a compelling mix of fashion and portraiture (Sassen has produced work for publications such as as I-D, Dazed & Confused, Fantastic Man, VOGUE France, Numéro, 10 and POP, along with advertising campaigns for Miu Miu, Adidas, Stella McCartney and Louis Vuitton) is concerned with childhood memories and challenging conventional western depictions of Africa, whilst maintaining a surreal ambiguity that functions as an admission of her own limited (all be it better than most) understanding of the continent.

The beauty and impact of these large scale prints really have to be seen to be believed.

Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming is the 6th album from French artist Anthony Gonzalez.

Described as a mix between the synth-pop of Saturday’s = Youth and the more ambient work of Before the Dawn Heals Us, the album is about dreams and how every one is different, how you dream differently when you’re a kid, a teenager, or an adult.

Spanning over 2 CDs each song has a sister track on the other disc tying both CDs together.

Based on Christopher Hampton’s play The Talking Cure, A Dangerous Method tells the story of the turbulent relationship between the father’s of psychoanalysis – Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud – and the beautiful but troubled woman that comes between them, Sabina Spielrein (Keira knightly).

More remarkable than the Freud-Jung feud that she catalysed, Spielrein, initially diagnosed by Jung as suffering from ‘psychotic hysteria’, would ultimately become a prominent psychologist herself - the second female member of the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society and a key (but seldom recognised) figure in bringing Russian psychology to prominence in the 20th Century.

It's a remarkable and fascinating story that's beautifully adapted for the big screen.

The third album from St. Vincent aka Annie Clark could well be her best to date, full of the beguiling vocals, intelligent songwriting and impossibly good guitar skills that have made her such an admired and exciting artist.

New Zealand based label Stolen Girlfriends Club started life as a creative collective presenting everything from installations and exhibitions to films and parties, as well as a collection of graphic t-shirts that quickly gained the label cult status.

Building on this success, Stolen Girlfriends Club applied their innovative and elegant designs to a full collection, with devastatingly cool results.

There are precious few things in the world today that haven't already been photographed, and the view from an aeroplane window is certainly not one of them. But we are always on the look out for photographers who are able to approach cliches or the over familiar in new and interesting ways, and make us reconsider what we think we already know.

Phillip Kalantzis-Cope's series 'on the plane' does exactly this. His images show us what is both a familiar yet unnatural environment, and somehow by looking at these images, the wonder of air travel becomes more apparent.

Colour, tone and texture are beautifully combined to create a series that is as much about the beauty of air travel as the power of photography, which when done well can change the banal to beautiful, and allows us to see the world in a new way.
