Free Range Roundup - Samantha Cawson - Jul 19 2011

For the second edition of our Free Range round up we're turning our attention to London based photographic artist, collector and curator Samantha Cawson. Her work stood out for its original, playful and thoughtful approach to the found photography trend, as well as a beautifully curated area of found objects that supported her images.

Samantha’s project ‘The Interference of Mr A. Ferguson’ uses found vintage photographs and objects to create her own fictional narrative for people who almost certainly never knew each other.

Ownership of the various character’s lives seems to be achieved by obscuring faces with coloured thread, giving the work its instant appeal through striking colour and unfamiliarity. The method also seems to almost protect the character's identity, and suggests a real attachment between the artist and her subjects, both physically and emotionally.

These beautiful images allow the people brought together after death to live again, and makes us think about the role of fate in our own lives, and the possibility of an after life through personal legacy or something more profound.

Washed Out - Within and Without - Jul 11 2011

"Chillwave" may well be an overused word and an increasingly oversubscribed genre, but Atlanta, Georgia based Ernest Greene, aka Washed Out, is taking things to a different level.

His debut album Within and Without follows two enjoyable EP’s and makes the battle for ‘King of Chillwave’ a fierce encounter between himself and Toro Y Moi. But if you gravitate towards the hazier side of dreamy soundscapes, as we do, our money is with Washed Out.

Working with Ben Allen, co-producer of Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavillion and Deerhunter’s Halcyon Digest has added depth to the Washed Out sound. And on reflection, Within and Without is perhaps as enjoyable as either of the aforementioned, which is quite some achievement.

You can stream the album on Soundcloud below or head to SubPop for more details.

Free Range Roundup - Marija Vainilaviciute - Jul 8 2011

We’ve spent the last month having a good look around Free Range Festival, Europe’s largest graduate Art and design show, and over the next few weeks we will feature a selection of our favourite photographic artists from the various degree programmes exhibiting.

First up is Marija Vainilaviciute. We loved Marija’s fashion and beauty work, her gorgeous colours and huge prints made a real impact. And there’s something about the model’s vacant expression that’s incredibly engaging…

We also love her project ‘things’ exploring memory and the importance of objects among young migrants to the UK. A nice idea brought to life with beautiful photography. Take a look at her website marijavainilaviciute.com for more work.

Levi's Vintage Clothing - Jul 5 2011

Levi's Vintage Clothing is both an exercise in producing premium quality denim and an homage to the heritage of one of the greatest brands of all time.

Collections carry exact replicas from Levi's 138 year old history, using historic quality selvage denim from original narrow looms, with much of the collection produced in the original Levis factory in the USA.

Each jean is marked with the date that it was first produced and comes with a document detailing the history behind its production, placing the item in its historical context – be it the 1966: 501 – the only style with covered rivets and a big ‘E’ tab and available for just five years, or the 1954: 501Z – a zipper version of the button fly jean that was likened by one angry customer to “peeing into the jaws of an alligator”.
