Dear Photograph - Jun 28 2011

They say a picture tells a thousand stories and that's certainly true for the images that make it onto'Dear Photograph'.

From the slightly difficult to decipher brief "take a picture of a picture from the past in the present" the Dear Photograph archive is full of user submitted images of a photo, often from the individuals childhood, matched up as closely as possible to the present day location. Each image is accompanied by a short comment, adding a real sense of emotion and nostalgia.

Bon Iver: Bon Iver - Jun 20 2011

Universally well received, For Emma, Forever Ago remains one of the most beautiful and beguiling records of recent times, catapulting Justin Vernon from his Wisconsin log cabin and into the spotlight via Kanye West’s recording studio.

Fortunately fame doesn’t seem to have gone to his head and the self-titled follow up retains the key ingredients that made the debut so special, albeit without the same sense of solitude. Right from the word go 'Bon Iver' is drenched in emotion; that it’s all but impossible to decipher Vernon’s poetic lyrics is unimportant – it’s an invitation to make of it what you will, bringing to the surface whatever’s going on for the listener, which is likely to be a mixture of heartbreak and happiness.

Rinko Kawauchi - 'Illuminance' - Jun 17 2011

One of our favorite photographers, Rinko Kawauchi, releases her latest book this month.

'Illuminance', published by Aperture, showcases both commissioned and personal work from the last fifteen years. As the title of her book suggests, Kawauchi's work is characterised by her beautiful use of light and nuanced colour palate.

But what appeals to us the most is the ethereal nature of her work that always seems to serve as a tribute to the ordinary and mundane, elevating the everyday to a heightened state of beauty that almost seems beyond this world.

The launch of Kawauchi's book is accompanied by an exhibition at The Gallery at Hermès in New York, which runs from 20th May to 16th July.

Resident Advisor Celebrates 10 Years with RA X - Jun 10 2011

Online electronic music bible Resident Advisor celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. Since 2001 RA has been an invaluable resource to both the clued up music lover and industry alike, as well as the club-goer simply looking for a good night out. And in way of celebration they have cooked up something special: 10 parties in 10 cities around the world, each with a secret headliner - the RA X – an artist that has positively influenced the electronic music landscape over the past decade, and who has been chosen to curate the rest of the lineup.

Each of the parties is marked with the release of a limited edition A1 print with artwork created by the likes of Trevor Jackson, Simon Cook, Lavent Fetis and more. Limited to just 75 and hand printed by K2 in London on A1 200gsm Cyclus Offset uncoated stock, each one costs a very reasonable £15; think of them as almost a gift from RA to say 'thanks'.

London kicks off proceedings this Saturday at Cable with a lineup diverse enough to make predicting the special guest all but impossible. Techno comes courtesy of Horizontal Ground's 19.454.18.5.25.5.18 and Onur Ozer (Cocoon). Trevor Jackson, Dial's Lawrence (Sten, Mule, Hamburg) and the young Kyle Hall (Wild Oats, FXHE, Hyperdub, Detroit) flying the flag for the more house-inclined. And what Hessle Audio boss Ben UFO will go for is anyone's guess.

Villa Vals - Jun 9 2011

Dug out of a mountainside 1250 metres high in the Swiss Alps, Villa Vals is a unique combination of architecture and interior design in an astounding Swiss environment.

Combining Dutch design with Swiss quality, the luxurious villa is extremely quiet, offering breathtaking views of pristine nature from its glass façade and onto the 60 m2 terrace.

You can ski, hike and bike in alpine surroundings before relaxing in the world famous Therme Vals Spa by architect Peter Zumthor, just a stones throw away.

Pakayla Rae Biehn - Jun 2 2011

It’s hard to believe that these incredible paintings from San Francisco based artists Pakayla Rae Biehn aren’t photographs, but they’re actually created using oil and acrylic paints.

Drawing inspiration from double-exposed photos (and perhaps the artists’ strabismus – a rare eye disorder resulting in a kind of double-vision sight), each image, if studied closely enough, reveals an emotional and sometimes disturbing story, which serves to add to the overall sense of blurring between dream and reality.

Cool Hunting Interview APC Founder Jean Touitou - Jun 1 2011

"People think it's basic so it's easy to design. It's much more complicated to design very very simple things"...

APC founder Jean Touitou is notoriously outspoken but he's usually right on the money as well. Here Cool Hunting catch up with him in a short video interview, providing an insight into the man behind the cult French label.
