Sleeping Beauty - May 27 2011

Death-haunted and quietly reckless, Lucy is a young university student who takes a job as Sleeping Beauty. In the sleeping Beauty Chamber old men seek an erotic experience that requires Lucy’s absolute submission. As this deeply unsettling task begins to bleed into her daily life, Lucy develops a growing need to know what happens to her when she sleeps.

Sleeping Beauty certainly walks a thin line between art-house and degrading, depending on your point of view, but beyond the disturbing ‘sex’ scenes lies the compelling question of Lucy’s troubled past, a stunning performance from Emily Browning in the lead role and a very accomplished musical score from up and coming composer Ben Frost.

The Burning House - May 25 2011

We've probably all at one point given some thought to the one item that we'd rescue from our house if it was burning down. As Foster Huntington, creator of The Burning House project puts it "It's a conflict between what's practical, valuable and sentimental. What you would take reflects your interests, background and priorities".

Fortunately in The Burning House you don't have to choose just one item, and you also get to lay it out nicely and take a photo before grabbing it all together and jumping out of the bedroom window.

Best of all though, The Burning House provides a lovely insight into the lives of otherwise anonymous people through their most important 'things' (and a short biography), making for a fascinating study on attachment to objects and the significance they hold in our lives.

Independent Label market: Berwick Street - May 20 2011

Following on from last month's Record Store Day, on Saturday 21st May some of Europe's leading independent record labels will get together for a unique event on Soho's Berwick Street.

With at least 20 labels taking part including Rough Trade, House Anxiety, Domino and Bella Union, each label boss will be manning their own stall armed with flasks of tea and punnets of 7"s.

We can't think of a better street in London to host the event, what with Berwick Street's rich heritage of independent record stores, and with special releases and guest appearances from the likes of These New Puritans, Mumford & Sons, Theo Parrish, Yick and more, this is definitely not to be missed.

Broken Manual / Somewhere to Disappear - May 18 2011

Mixing colour with Black and White, Studio with location, Magnum photographer Alec Soth's latest project Broken Manual is an intimate, poignant and often uncanny insight into the lives of American Citizens who have taken the decision to remove themselves from society, and lead a life of solitude and isolation in the great outdoors.

The series offers a privileged insight into the lives of a few who have rejected the American dream in search of their own ideals, with each image providing just enough information to allow us to begin to enter the heads of the individual's portrayed, and to wonder what has caused them to go it completely alone.

Followed all around America for two years by two young American filmmakers, Laure Flammarion and Arnaud Uyttenhove, the three artists drove over 20,000 miles together going from one state to another, and from one season to another. The result is a 57 minutes movie about the photographer and his project called Somewhere to Disappear, offering a series of incredible meetings while telling the story of an introspective journey.

Despite critical acclaim, showings of the film are few and far between with the Somewhere to Disappear Facebook Page acting as a forum for where the film should be taken to next. Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi - Rome - May 13 2011

A small window on human life, touching on love, death, happiness, desperation, and the visceral connection of a man and a woman”.

That’s how acclaimed Italian composer Daniele Luppi describes Rome his latest project with super-producer Brian Burton, aka Danger Mouse.

United by a shared passion for classic Italian film music, Burton and Luppi decided to create something special. After an intense song writing session the pair travelled to Rome, assembling a dream team of musicians from classic Westerns such as The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Once Upon a Time in the West – including the legendary Marc 4 backing band and Alessandro Alessandroni’s ‘I Cantori Moderni’ choir.

Every effort was made to replicate the recording practices of the 1960s/70s golden age: the pair scoured the city for vintage equipment using bottles of wine as payment; recording was live and straight to tape, with no electronics, computers, 21st-century effects or studio trickery; Rome’s cavernous Forum Studios (sitting underneath a neo-classical church carved out of an ancient catacomb) were booked. And with Norah Jones and Jack White enlisted for the vocals, it’s clear that Rome is an album built on perfectionism, patience and ambition.

But for all its cinematic qualities, what follows is a complex and nuanced pop record with intensity and darkness as well as uplift and light. Rome wasn't built in a day - five years in fact for Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi - but then this is a beautiful, perfectly formed record that will doubtless withstand the test of time…

Uniforms - March of no Coincidence - May 12 2011

Uniforms for the Dedicated was founded in 2007 in Stockholm, Sweden as a collective of artists, musicians, film makers and designers – a playground of creative talent that provides the influence and inspiration for Uniforms of the Dedicated clothing collections as well as stand alone projects under the Uniforms for the Dedicated creative umbrella.

Each season the Uniforms collective releases a clothing collection along with a music single and video, with March of no Coincidence the latest offering from ‘Uniforms’, the music arm of the collective.

Released on Berlin based Trunkfunk Records and available now on Beatport, March of No Coincidence features Maria Nordström on vocals, former lead singer of Zeigeist.

“Brittle vocals are juxtaposed against woozy smeared synths and dark tones, creating the dramatic tension, dance floor urgency and melodic fluidity of the track, with Uniforms production prowess succeeding in the delicate balancing act of darkness and light; tempering the brooding verses with an uplifting chorus that blooms into neon shafts of light and fluorescent melodies.”

TF018: Uniforms - March Of No Coincidence (Original Version) by Trunkfunk

Already attracting remixes from an impressive cast of international house and techno talent, including Coggles favourite, Crosstown Rebels' first lady Deniz Kurtel, who brings her signature New York flavour, drenching the arrangement in reverb and distortion, as well as house veteran Andre Lodemann, Trunkfunk label chief DJ Nibc, rising Irish talent Mano Le Tough, Dan Curtin and Mollinex.

Keep your eyes on the Coggles Facebook Page over the next couple of days as we unveil an exclusive Uniforms competition and take a closer look at the Uniforms for the Dedicated collective. In the meantime, to hear more from Uniforms head over to the Trunkfunk Soundcloud Page or to buy March of no Coincidence on Beatport click here.

Charlotte Taylor SS11 - An Island Invasion - May 6 2011

Central St Martins graduate Charlotte Taylor's second collection from her eponymous label has landed at Coggles and it's another quirky, elegant, and most importantly fun collection.

Entitled 'an island invasion', inspiration for the collection is yet again weird and wonderful: vintage robots, sail making, copper and rust are all in there, with unusual fabric combinations and lots of colour as well.

Many years ago on a dank, wet, foggy day legend tells of an invasion of our island... Tales of small, orange robots arriving on small, orange ships. They say, as the copper boats rose from the ocean, their rusty bellies flashed a palette of colours that infiltrated the skyline. Burnt Orange, Rusty reds, Emerald and Lime greens and Cobalt blues, a true spectacle. Eyes were only distracted by the bellowing sailcloth of the spinnaker that dominated their view, the bold colours and lines were powerful yet unusually graceful.

Fear was rife as the spectacular ship approached and orange dots scurried round the deck preparing to dock. “What did they want?” The grannies, Penguins and eccentric gents who had arrived 6 months previously for Autumn / Winter were waiting to great them.

As the Robots walked ashore the sun breached the fog and sunlight flooded the scene. Their subtle beauty was breathtaking. Exotic and exquisite silks loosely draped, danced in the morning breeze. Dashes of colour, contrasting textures of wools, silk velvet and chambray twisted and fell round their bodies. The crowd were silent. Mesmerized.

As the “Island Invaders” greeted their hosts it became apparent that their visit was without malice. They had heard from afar of the exemplary standard of tea and cakes provided every afternoon by the grannies and had insisted upon visiting."
