Club Noir - Feb 24 2011

Club Noir is an extraordinary burlesque club – a club night with DJ’s, two burlesque shows and live music – officially the biggest burlesque club in the world.

Club nights are held around 4-6 times a year with each one following a theme, with acts dreamt up, props commissioned, costumes designed, performers cast and dances choreographed. Not surprisingly, the dress code is taken very seriously: “this is not a fancy dress club. This is a club where you can dress up. Big difference.”

If you like the sound of all this check the calendar for upcoming shows then consult the dress code on the info page. For guys think military, punk, rockabilly, dandy, Moulin Rouge, smoking jacket, Mod, etc and for girls - Dita Von Teese, old Hollywood, lingerie, fetish, Moulin Rouge, showgirls, corsets, burlesque, rubber, femme fatale, Paris chic or just whatever you're really into!

The Tweed Run - 9 April 2011 - Feb 24 2011

The third annual Tweed Run returns to London this April 9th "for a friendly 10 mile jaunt around the Capital, taking in London’s famous sites – including St Paul’s, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Savile Row – with a stop for a spot of tea, and ending with a bit of a knees-up out Shoreditch way".

Proper attire is of course expected - tweed suits, plus fours, bowties, cycling capes, and jaunty flat caps are all encouraged, with prizes awarded for best dressed man and best dressed woman as well as best vintage bicycle and of course best moustache.

Registration opens at noon on Saturday 26 February 2011 and you'd best be quick if you want to take part - last year all 400 spots were taken in the first 45 minutes. The cost of the ride is £5 with all proceeds going to Bikes4Africa.

Waste Land - Feb 23 2011

"What I really want to do is to be able to change the lives of a group of people with the same materials that they deal with everyday." This mission took renowned artist Vix Muniz on a journey from his home in Brooklyn, New York to his native Brazil and the world's largest rubbish dump, Jardim Gramacho, on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro.

Initially planning to 'paint' the "catadores" (self designated pickers of recyclable materials) with rubbish, Muniz's approach changed as the Catadores began to recreate photographic images of themselves out of the rubbish that they are immersed in every day. In doing so, the documentary reveals both their dignity and despair as they begin to re-imagine their lives.

Receiving numerous awards, including the Audience Award for Best World Cinema Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival and the Amnesty International Human Rights Film Award at the 2010 Berlin Film Festival, Waste Land provides stirring evidence of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit.

The Tides Zihuatanejo Bay - Mexico - Feb 22 2011

Hugging the white sands of Zihuatanejo Bay's serene Playa La Ropa, The Tides is a romantic hideaway reclining on one of Mexico's most beautiful stretches of beach.

The resort's terrecotta-tiled villas and thatched Palapa cabanas sit amidst luxuriant tropical gardens and although no two acommodations are the same, they each have a private terrace or balcony and garden or bay views, while the suites have their own outdoor infinity pools.

1000 feet of private beach, three swimming pools, an intimate spa and wellbeing centre and two gourmet restaurants are yours to enjoy, not to mention the endless sunshine and jaw-dropping location...no wonder it was named 'most outstanding hotel' by Condé Nast...

Irina Werning - Back To The Future - Feb 19 2011

Argentinean photographer Irina Werning's portfolio is full of fantastic images. From her Damned and Beautiful series that explores the decadence of London's high class parties, to Little School in the Andes with its breathtaking shots of scattered schools and the children that study in them high up in the mountains and all but cut off from civilisation, this is a very talented photographer and storyteller.

Perhaps her most original work though, or at least the most instantly engaging, is Back to the Future - childhood portraits re-enacted down to the very last detail: same place, same pose, same clothes, same people, only decades on. Not only is the attention to detail staggering - a ray of light shining across a wall, a partially made bed or seemingly identical clothes that have grown with their owners - but also it is a fascinating and immediate journey back in time and then Back to the Future that asks a thousand questions all at once. Most compellingly, we’re left wondering what happened in between, how has this made these people who they are today and was it all inevitable?

We urge you to click through to irinawerning.com to see the full series and explore the rest of her portfolio, or go to the Coggles.com Facebook page to see our favourites from Back to the Future and let us know your thoughts.

Paul Smith Black Label - Feb 18 2011

Paul Smith Black Label looks to the world of fashion photographer Nick Knight for inspiration for SS11. Knights images are often sexually charged with great sense of energy and has been used to influence both colour and print.

The collection focuses on clean, elegant lines mixed with vivid hues and strong graphics and explores the manipulation of print and colour by using complex techniques to filter and distort.

Key looks are simple and stylish: A-line and pleated skirts to draw attention to the waist, sculpted tailoring with nipped in middles and longer line jackets, while slouchy blouses in silk georgette are combined with tightly fitting pencil skirts or slim stretch cigarette trousers. 'Exploding' floral prints appear on knitwear with standout dresses in bright orange, green and a new take on the classic Paul Smith multistripe.

The Spring/Summer 11 Paul Smith Black Label collection is available online now at Coggles.com.

50 Years of Dr. Martens - The History - Feb 17 2011

Born out of an unlikely marriage between a German inventor and an English family from Northamptonshire, Dr. Martens – at first a working class symbol and then one of revolution – is without doubt one of the world’s most iconic brands.

Meeting through an advert in the classified pages of a magazine, Dr. Klaus Maertens, with his shoe sole made of air, and the Griggs family, with their long history of quality footwear production, put their skills together and created a boot that at once defined comfort, was practical, hard wearing and had all the hallmarks of a design classic.

Embraced first of all by the working classes, a quiet revolution was already underway… Skinheads, fanatical about their fashion became the first subculture to adopt the boot in the early 1960s, with punks, rebelling against everything and taking just Dr. Martens with them, joining shortly after. Before long, almost every other subculture – mods, glam, ska, Goths, grunge, psychobillies, nu-metal, straight-edge, Britpop and more – adopted Dr. Martens as their symbol of empowerment, individuality and freedom; not only does this speak of Dr Martens’ incredibly strong identity – achieved without a single penny spent on marketing – but also the cultural significance of a brand that shouldn’t really be thought of as a brand at all…

And while the world may have changed beyond recognition since Dr. Marten’s early days, some things remain the same: Dr. Martens are still a design classic, they still stand for quality and they still represent empowerment, individuality and freedom to countless people across the world.

Dr. Martens is available now at Coggles and you can find the collection here

Objectified - Feb 16 2011

Surrounded by objects to the extent that we are, it's all too easy to take good design for granted, and with it the people responsible for said good design. As Objectified Director Gary Hustwit puts it, "on an average day, each of us uses hundreds of objects...who makes all these things, and why do they look and feel the way they do? All of these objects are “designed,” but how can good design make them, and our lives, better"?

Feature-length documentary Objectified sets out to answer these questions, shining a light (probably a Bauhaus one) on our complex relationship with manufactured objects, and by extension, the people who design them.

Through vérité footage and in-depth conversations, the film documents the creative processes of some of the world’s most influential product designers, and looks at how the things they make impact our lives.

It's a fascinating and inspirational documentary for aspiring product designers and for anyone else simply passionate about great design, as we are...

More details including how to get hold of the full film on the Objectified website.

Holton Rower - Feb 11 2011

We discovered contemporary artist Holton Rower while perusing It’s Nice That earlier in the week. We really like his work, especially the 'Pour' paintings, which are shown coming to life in the video above. Who said watching paint dry was dull?

For more on Holton, including the rest of his portfolio of paintings and sculptures as well as exhibition info click here

V&A Reading Rooms - Feb 10 2011

Housed at 8 Exhibition Road in South Kensington, The V&A Reading Rooms is an off-site bookshop come wine bar. Small and intimate, the rooms retain their original architectural features - high ceilings, fine cornices and bay windows - combined with the style and quirkiness of the V&A Shops.

Customers can browse a fine selection of eclectic and exciting titles while tucking into a menu of lemon almonds, radish with sea salt, and quails eggs, washed down with a selection of wines, teas and coffees. It's got Sunday afternoon written all over it...

This is not a Valentine's Day post... - Feb 8 2011

Call us dead on the inside, but we're not that into Valentine's day at Coggles - it's all a bit commercial and clichéd. That's not to say that we are unromantic though, and hearts we do like - very much.

So if you are looking for a Valentine's day present and are of the opinion (rightfully so) that a card from moonpig won't do, here are some heart-related suggestions that will stand the test of time.

Nuji - Feb 7 2011

One of our best online discoveries of recent, Nuji combines the social aspects of shopping with the utility of a bookmarking site and the style of a design agency.

A tool for remembering, sharing and discovering products you love with like minded people, Nuji is focused on making product discovery as fun and easy as possible by allowing people to follow others with similar taste in clothes, music, books, films and so on.

Nuji's two main functions are 'Tag' and ‘Discover’. Here’s how it works:

If you see a product in a store, you can scan the product barcode or take a picture using the Nuji i-Phone app, and if you see a product online, you can use the Nuji bookmarklet to save the item. Everything you save is synced in real-time to your account so you can come back to it at anytime.

Nuji’s other main function - ‘discover’ - enables you to find people with similar taste and follow them to discover new products. It's a great source of inspiration whether you are shopping for yourself or someone else, or just interested in discovering cool new stuff.

Head over toNuji to find out more, download the i-Phone app and start discovering - you should find plenty of Coggles items already tagged!

Monitaly Spring/Summer 11 Lookbook - Feb 6 2011

The Monitaly Spring/Summer 11 collection has arrived at Coggles and as ever it is full of beautiful pieces with a fantastic lookbook to accompany it.

Shot in the Maine wilderness, the label's home, as well as traditional American universities and colleges in the same state, the lookbook's narrative is of a college professor enjoying a summer holiday back in the good old days... It provides the perfect backdrop for the collection, which is inspired by the same theme.

Overall, it is a collection defined by elegant but relaxed tailoring, exceptional outerwear and qulaity and construction that pays homage to a bygone era of craft and clothing.

More images from the Monitaly Spring/Summer 11 lookbook can be found on our Facebook Page and the collection is online now at Coggles.com.

Eric Yahnker - Feb 4 2011

At first glance Eric Yahnker's website is a visually striking collage of seemingly unrelated pieces as if uploaded by a photo blogger with a very good eye. But look a little closer and you will notice an embedded link to his CV, which when opened reveals a long list of impressive exhibitions and press coverage.

Based in LA, Yahnker studied journalism at the University of Southern California, where during his second year he worked on storyboards for South park, developing his witty cultural satire style which now forms the backbone of his art, "manipulating language and marshalling ubiquitous pop imagery to articulate an incisive critique of contemporary culture" (LA Times Magazine).

We're big fans of his work, especially the anthropomorphism pieces, which in case you're unsure (as we were) means giving human characteristics to animals and objects (thanks to It’s Nice That for clearing this up).

To see more examples of Eric's work and for details of his current exhibition ”Cracks of Dawn” in LA, click through to ericyahnker.com

Without a doubt one of the most photographed cities on earth, there is certainly no shortage of New York photography books.

What we have here though is an unparalleled compilation of contemporary photographs of ‘the city that never sleeps’ and its 5 boroughs by famous and emerging artists, offering views, cityscapes and vignettes not seen before.

With more than 350 images by more than 100 artists such as Jack Pierson, Atta Kim, Doug Aitken, Joel Meyerowitz and Ed Burtynsky, New York: A Photographer's City pays homage to its subject matter in a way that few other publications have managed to achieve.

Justin Townes Earle - Feb 2 2011
